Browsers

Web browsers are applications for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. There are many to choose from, and most of them have versions for mobile devices. Here is a little info on browsers commonly used at OWU, with links to more resources on each.

Chrome

Chrome is Google’s browser, and is the basis for Chrome OS devices, such as Chromebooks. It comes by default on most Android devices, and is available for iOS, MacOS and Windows. To download Chrome, click here.

To set a homepage, locate this iconon the top right side of the page.
Click settings, locate “Appearance,” and enable “Show Home button.”

Edge

Edge is Microsoft’s latest browser, introduced with Windows 10, and it is available for all Android and iOS platforms.  To download Edge, click here.

To set homepage, locate this icon on the top right side of the page.  Select settings and find “Open Microsoft Edge with…” Select and type the URL of the page(s) desired for homepage.

Firefox

The Firefox browser is produced by the nonprofit Mozilla community, and is available for Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows, and most Linux distributions.  To download Firefox, click here.

To set homepage, click “tools” from the menu on top and select “options.”
Within “general,” locate “home page” and set a homepage.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer (IE) is Microsoft’s old web browser. First introduced in 1995, it has more or less been replaced by it’s new browser, Edge. Only the latest version of IE, v11, will continue to besupported  as a component of the Windows operating system. It is not available for any other OS.

To set a homepage, select the “tools button,” and choose “Internet options.”  Locate the “General” tab, and select “Homepage” to add the site(s) desired as homepage.

Safari

Safari is Apple’s browser that comes with MacOS and iOS. It’s also available for Windows, but not for Android. To download Safari, click here.

To set homepage, choose Safari, select Preferences, and click General.  In the Homepage field, select the page desired as homepage.
