Recording your class session can be helpful for a number of reasons. Please keep in mind the following guidelines when recording your sessions to protect the confidentiality of your students.
- Any recording that’s just a faculty member (e.g. a lecture, with no images of or participation by students) doesn’t implicate FERPA and can be shared however the faculty member wishes.
- Any recording that includes student participation is covered by FERPA. It can be posted for viewing and use by any enrolled students in the course, but not beyond that (without permissions). If you are going to record a session with student participation, please make sure that you inform students. Blackboard, Google Drive, and YouTube private links are potential solutions. Please contact us if you wish to use these distribution channels.
- It is advisable to delete the course recordings with student participation after the end of the semester.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
