<del class="delete">Malware</del><ins class="insert">Wireless network downtime on West Campus (3/9/2010)
OWU's wireless network will go down on the West Campus for a brief period between 8 and 9 am on Wednesday, March 10 2010 for software license installation.
Malware</ins> Trojan "SecurityTools, System Security" <del class="delete">(10/18/2010)</del><ins class="insert">(1/18/2010)</ins>
There has been numerous infections of the a malware program named "Security Tools, System Security" on University and student machines. Security Tools is a fake malware remover with an impressively generic name.. It is often loaded when the user visits a web site that may cause a pop up to appear informing you that you have a virus and you should run a free scan. Running the scan loads a Trojan on your machine. Once inside and active, Security Tools floods the user with popups and fake system notifications, claiming the system is infected and in need of an anti-spyware program. It may eventually render your computer useless. All of these popups lead to the purchase page of Security Tool. Much like any other rogue, Security Tool will also perform fake system scans, which mark legitimate files as threats. To remove these “threats” you supposedly have to purchase the full version of Security Tool, which is just as fake as the trial. If you receive any popups offering a free virus scan please DO NOT initiate a scan.
Reminder About How to Send Out Campus-Wide Student E-mail Messages (12/9/2009 sent by Deb Lamp)

...
Thus, for example, a message for the students list should be addressed to students@thuban.owu.edu
Our apologies for the resulting inconvenience. Meanwhile any messages sent since about 2 pm yesterday should be reposted to the appropriate list with address modified as above.

...
Users (9/3/09)<del class="delete"> </del>
Advisory: Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X - updating your operating system to Mac OS X version 10.6
If you have Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X installed and you plan to update your Mac OS X operating system from version 10.5 to version 10.6, you must do one of the following:

...
Failure to do this will cause your Sophos Anti-Virus installation to crash. This is because Mac OS X version 10.6 is not supported on earlier versions of Sophos Anti-Virus.
You can obtain a copy of Sophos version 7.0.5 at http://owufiles.owu.edu/antivirus/Sophos/Mac%20Version/ . This location is only accessible from an Ohio Wesleyan network address. If you are off campus, download it from a machine on campus to a USB drive and use it to transfer the file to your computer. To download, double-click the file savosx70sa.dmg.

...
downtime (8/28/09)<del class="delete"> </del>
In order to install a system software upgrade, the OWU wireless network will be shut down for some of the time between 7 and 8 am on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
If you are unable to use the BishopNet automatic configuration utility, please follow these manual connection directions -- after you have reset your OWU password, if necessary. Go back and see if you need to reset your OWU password.
To configure your computer's wireless network setting, first make sure your wireless card is turned on and enabled. Next, right-click the "Network" icon in the system tray (the computer-and-globe icon in the lower-right corner of the desktop). Then click Connect to a network.
<ins class="insert">Surf over to http://wifi.owu.edu/ to finish your registration. You will be asked for your OWU username and password one more time. Once you complete and Submit this, you should be online with BishopNet.
fmanualFully Manual Configuration
If Vista was unable to find BishopNet or automatically configure itself with BishopNet's settings in the previous steps, follow these instructions to fully configure your connection:
Click the Start Menu and then Control Panel
In Control Panel select View network status and tasks (under "Network and Internet") which will bring up the Network and Sharing Center.
From the Tasks pane, select Manage Wireless Networks.
If BishopNet already appears in the list, double-click its list entry to configure it and skip to step 8. Otherwise, click the add button to create a new entry.
From the "Manually connect to a wireless network" window, select the Manually create a network profile option.
Encryption type: TKIP
Check "Start this connection automatically"
Uncheck "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting"
After filling in the required information, click Next. You should see the "Successfully Added" dialog. Now click the Change connection settings option.
Click the security tab on the "Wireless Network Properties" window that pops up.
Make sure the authentication method is set to "Protectead EAP (PEAP)" and then click settings.
In the "Protected EAP Properties" window that pops up make these changes:
Microsoft Windows 7
Windows 7 is the successor to Windows Vista, which was meant to be a big improvement to Windows XP. After a lukewarm reception, mainly because numerous problems with the Vista operating system surfaced even before its debut, many users and organizations decided not to upgrade from Windows XP. Windows 7 changes all that. It is a stable, reliable operating system that brings a wealth of new features and benefits to the personal computer. And in many cases, Windows 7 will run just fine on a computer currently running Windows XP.
Benefits of Windows 7
Microsoft ended full support for Windows XP on April 14, 2009. Previously released security updates are still available, but no new ones will be published.
Windows 7 includes the Aero interface that allows you to preview open windows and documents via the taskbar. You can also "snap" windows to the side or top of the screen, and "shake" a window to leave it displayed while minimizing all others.
The revamped Windows 7 taskbar is more user friendly. You can pin applications to it, and select an action from a jump list.
You can add gadgets to the Windows 7 desktop for greater efficiency. Dozens of free gadgets are available for download.
Windows 7 includes libraries, locations that monitor and display all the files of a particular type from other folders that you specify.
Windows 7 offers easy, intuitive search tools so you can find files and information faster. You can search right from the Start menu or from any Explorer or library window.
Internet Explorer 8 offers safer, more private browsing with improved searching.
Windows 7 offers easier, more automatic networking.
Windows XP Mode: a free, downloadable tool that enables you to run Windows XP software in a "native" XP environment within Windows 7.
SysReqSystem Requirements
The system requirements for running Windows 7 vary slightly depending on whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system:
CPU: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, whether 32-bit or 64-bit
Random access memory (RAM, or system memory): 1 gigabyte (GB) for a 32-bit system, 2 GB for a 64-bit system
Hard disk space (storage): 16 GB for a 32-bit version, 20 GB for a 64-bit version
Graphics (display device): DirectX 9 with Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.0 or higher driver
Other capabilities, as applicable: For example, recording video requires a TV tuner, audio output is needed to play music or other audio, network capabilities require network hardware and so on
To run Windows XP Mode, a PC's CPU must support virtualization (Intel VT or AMD-V) and have it turned on. The PC also requires an additional 1 GB of RAM and 15 GB of hard disk space.
{networkPrinter.jpg}
<ins class="insert">networkMacInstalling a network printer on a Mac
Go to System Preferences
Click the "Print & Fax" icon in the Hardware section
Make sure the lock in the bottom left corner is open so changes can be made
Click the "+" button in the bottom left corner of the list of printers
An "Add Printer" window will open. At the top of the window click the IP tab.
For "Protocol" select "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP"
For "Address" enter the IP address of the printer you're trying to add. If you're adding a campus printer (for faculty and staff) the IP address may be somewhere on the printer. If you can't find the IP address for an OWU printer you can contact the Help Desk for assistance.
Leave the "Queue" field blank.
The "Name" field probably automatically took the IP address you entered. Change the name to something more descriptive.
For "Location" just type something descriptive to help you remember which printer it is.
Leave "Print Using" on the value that was automatically selected when you entered the IP.</ins>
