Sophos Anti-Virus

Sophos anti-virus is provided to all faculty, staff and students of Ohio Wesleyan. It is installed on University owned computers when set up by Information Services, and it is available to students free of charge on the OWU Network CD for Windows. Students may also use another, approved anti-virus program. See the Impulse Point Policies page for the list of approved programs.

See the Computer Security Page and Network Security Page for general information about computer viruses and other malware.

  3. Change the "Scan name" to whatever you want, ie: Weekly Scan.
  4. Place a check mark in the box next to the C: drive. This will automatically place additional check marks. This will scan everything on your computer (unless you have more than one hard drive.) Note: Do not place check marks on any network drive.

  5. Left click on "Configure this scan" at the bottom of the screen.
  6. On the "Options" tab place a check in the box next to "Scan all files".
  7. On the "Cleanup" tab place a check in the box next to "Automatically clean up items that contain virus/spyware", and select "Delete" under "If you do not use automatic cleanup, or if cleanup fails, what do you want to do with the infected file?"
  8. Click "OK" to continue.
  9. Click "Schedule this scan" at the bottom of the screen.
  10. Place a check in the box "Enable schedule".
  11. Place a check in the days you want to scan, or leave the default week days.
  12. Set the time when you want the scan to begin. This should be a time when your computer is turned on, and preferably not being used. You can still work during a scan, but it will slow down your computer.
  13. At the bottom of the screen enter your Windows username (if not already provided ie: OWU\user), and password two times. You do not have to be a local administrator on the computer to do this.

  14. Click "OK" to continue and then click the Save button. You should see the scheduled scan in the "Available scans" window.
