Updating Your OWU Club or Group Website with FrontPage
- Open Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 (usually located in the Microsoft Office folder on the Desktop.)
- Select “Open Site” from the File menu.
- In the Site name: field type in ftp://cc.owu.edu and press Enter or click the Open button.
- You will be prompted for FTP login information. Select “User” and enter your OWU club or group’s username in the field to the right. Enter your club or group’s password where prompted. Click the OK button.
- You will see another window asking for your username and password again. Be sure to replace “OWU\beic” with your club or group’s username without “OWU\”. Enter the password again where prompted. Click the OK button.
- You will see a Web Site Setup screen. Make sure FTP is selected. In the Web Site Location box towards the bottom make sure it says ftp://cc.owu.edu. In the Root Directory field type in public_html. Click the Next button.
- The next screen will ask you to Choose a destination web location. FrontPage requires that you create a local copy of your web site to edit, and then upload those files to the web server. It will default to C:\Documents and Settings\beic\My Documents\My Web Sites\ and then the username of the group. You can leave this as the default. Please note: all files on OWU lab computers are deleted when the computer is shut down or restarted. Be sure you upload any changes to your web site. It’s a good idea to back them up to a flash drive too.
- Click the Next button. Click the Finish button.
- FrontPage will show you an explorer window with your local files on the left and the server files on the right. Before you can edit them you must copy them onto the local site. To do this, select a file on the right and click the left-pointing arrow on the bar between the two sides. The file will now appear on both sides. Tip: index.html is normally the home page for your web site.
- Once the file is on the left, the local side of the screen, you will be able to double-click to open it. It will open in another tab in which you can edit its contents. You have access to a wide range of features in FrontPage, available in the menus and toolbars. You may also edit directly in the main window in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) fashion. There is also a Preview button at the bottom of the window. Be sure to save your work.
- When you’ve finished editing and you’ve saved the page, close that tab with the X in the top right edge of the pane—to the far right of the tab.
- Now that you’re back in the split-pane Web Site view you can upload your edited page to the web server. In the bottom right of the screen you will have some options for publishing. Make sure “Local to remote” is selected and click the “Publish Web site” button.
- Open up a browser, navigate to your club or group’s site and confirm your changes have been posted.
