BishopMail

For all your OWU email needs, see the BishopMail page.

Google Docs

Google Docs through BishopApps gives you access to Google's online word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation creation software using the same account info you use to log into BishopMail. A short summary from the Google Docs homepage:

  • Create and Share Your Work Online
  • Upload from and save to your desktop
  • Edit anytime, from anywhere
  • Pick who can access your documents
  • Share changes in real time
  • Files are stored securely online

For more info about Google Docs, check out the tour or see the Google Docs help page. Start using Google Docs by going to the Bishop Apps login page, logging in as usual with your OWU email credentials, and clicking on "Documents" in the top left hand corner of the page that appears after you log in.

How to share a document with Google Docs
  1. Sign in to BishopMail via the Student or Faculty/Staff menu on the OWU home page: http://www.owu.edu/.
  2. Click on the Documents link at top left. You will see the main Google Docs interface.
  3. Click on Upload in the toolbar below the search box.
  4. Click the Browse button next to the Browse your computer to select a file to upload: field.
  5. Use your computer's standard browse window to find the file you wish to share, and click Open. You can upload Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files, as well as others.
  6. If you would like Google Docs to use a different name for this file than your original file name, you can specify that on the Upload a File screen.
  7. Click the Upload File button.
  8. You will then be presented with that document in the Google Document, Spreadsheet, or Presentation interface. At this point you have nearly all the functionality of Microsoft Office at your fingertips. The layout of menus and tools will be a bit different, but it's pretty intuitive.
  9. Now, to share the document with others, click on the Share button at top right. A drop-down menu asks how you'd like to share the file with others. Select Invite people...
  10. A Share with Others dialogue window appears. Start typing people's names in the Invite: box. Notice that Google Apps for Education has a type-ahead feature and that our entire campus directory has already been uploaded. When you find a match to what you're typing just press Enter on the keyboard or click the listing with the mouse. The name and email address will be listed in the box, followed by a comma. You can add as many people as you wish. You have the option of inviting them to view the file only, rather than editing it. You can type a quick note inviting them to edit this document in Google Docs or you can add them to the list of collaborators without sending an invitation.
  11. Others whom you have invited will then be able to log into their own Google Docs account and select your username under Shared with... in the left pane of the main interface. The document you have shared with them will appear in the list in the main pane on the right.
  12. Once you (or they) have opened up the spreadsheet you can see the revision history by selecting Revision history from the Tools menu.

How to send someone a link to a document with Google Docs
First, follow steps 1-8 above to create the document. Then do this:
  1. Click on the Share button at top right.
  2. Select "Get the link to share" from the menu.
  3. Put a check mark in "Allow everyone with the link to view (OWU BishopApps users only). You may also allow them to edit the document.
  4. Click once in the box below "Share this link via email or IM:" The link will be highlighted. You may now copy it using a right mouse button click or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C (Command+C on a Mac.)
  5. Click the Save and Close button.
  6. The link is now stored on the clipboard, ready to be pasted into an e-mail or anywhere else. People who click on that link will get access to the document.

Google Calendar

Google Calendar is a free online calendar you can use through your BishopApps account. From the Google Calendar homepage:

  • Organize your schedule and share events with friends
  • Share your schedule
Let your family and friends see your calendar, and view schedules that others have shared with you.
  • Get your calendar on the go
Access your calendar from your phone using its built-in calendar or mobile browser.
  • Never forget another event
Get event reminders via email or have text messages sent right to your mobile phone.

Troubleshooting

If you're having issues with BishopApps you can check this page to see if Google is having any problems with their service. If there's an issue with the BishopApps service (as opposed to a problem with your own computer) it should show up on that page.
